According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, compounding refers to any manipulation of a drug beyond the information presented on its label. This includes crushing or mixing medicines for household pets. With input from a trusted veterinarian, you may determine that compounding provides several worthwhile treatments for your dog or cat.
If your pet is struggling to take their medication, compounding may make it easier for them to swallow. Crushed tablets can be inserted into liquids, making them easier to consume. You may also add more palatable flavors to your pet’s medicine if they dislike their medicine’s taste. Furthermore, if your veterinarian approves, you can mix your pet’s tablets or adjust their medication’s strength and dosage. If your pet is allergic to certain ingredients, compounding can also remove allergens from their medication.
